Totomi sanchu from the Fugaku sanjurokkei is among Hokusai's most compositionally inventive designs, depicting timber framers constructing a large wooden structure deep in the mountains of Totomi Province, present-day western Shizuoka Prefecture. Two laborers bend a massive log beam into position, their bodies forming geometric counterpoints to the rectilinear framework being assembled. Mount Fuji is visible through a triangular void created by intersecting beams, its white cone precisely framed by the structural opening. The print demonstrates Hokusai's systematic method of situating Fuji's presence within scenes of human labor and industry, departing from the scenic or recreational contexts more typical of the meisho-e tradition. The contrast between the physical exertion of the workers — ropes taut, bodies at full extension — and the static, remote mountain operates at both compositional and thematic levels. Prussian blue in the sky and on Fuji's upper snow zone anchors the palette. Wood shavings and construction debris in the foreground provide textural detail consistent with Hokusai's interest in the material reality of craft and labor.
