- Series:
- Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (print 40 of 46)
- Medium:
- Color woodblock print

From Hokusai's landmark series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei, c. 1830–1832), this [oban](/glossary/oban)-format [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) depicts the Nakahara district of Sagami Province, in present-day Kanagawa Prefecture. The composition places Mount Fuji in the middle or far distance, rising above the level plain of the Sagami lowlands with characteristic geometric clarity. Hokusai's Sagami Province prints in this series often include agricultural workers or travelers in the foreground, using the human scale to underscore the mountain's commanding height. Nakahara lay along one of the main routes connecting Edo to the Tokaido road, making it a familiar transit landscape for the series' urban audience. The print employs the Prussian blue (bero-ai, or Berlin blue) that Hokusai adopted extensively in this series after the pigment became available through Dutch trade — a color that distinguishes the Thirty-six Views from earlier [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) landscape work and gives Fuji's silhouette its characteristic cool-toned clarity against open sky.
