From Hokusai's "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," this yoko-e oban composition presents Nihonbashi—the ceremonial center of Edo's road network—as foreground subject, with Mount Fuji reduced to a pale form at the distant horizon. The bridge carries a procession of fish porters bearing loads on tenbin shoulder poles, their commercial labor foregrounding the practical character of the site; the adjacent uogashi fish market made Nihonbashi among the most active transshipment points in the city. Hokusai's compositional strategy here is characteristic of the series: a busy, populated foreground recession gives way to a serene and diminished Fuji, reversing the expectation that the mountain would dominate. Prussian blue (bero-ai), introduced into Japanese woodblock printing shortly before the series was first issued around 1830–32, dominates sky and water, while Fuji is rendered in pale blue with a white summit. The technique of bokashi graduation in the sky adds atmospheric depth to the horizontal format.
