Viewing Sunset over Ryogoku Bridge from the Ommaya Embankment is one of the Edo-centered designs in Katsushika Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei), the great series begun around 1829. From the Ommaya Embankment along the Sumida River, Hokusai shows a long downward view across the water toward the famous Ryogoku Bridge, with boats clustered in the foreground, urban skyline along the far bank, and Mount Fuji rising as a small pale cone behind everything. The setting sun glows in a strip of warm sky, while the rest of the design relies on the cool Prussian blues that define the series. The figures - boatmen, passengers, and dockside workers - are summarized with quick, telling lines that suggest the late-day bustle of one of Edo's busiest river crossings. The Art Institute of Chicago impression is widely cited in literature on the Fuji series. Like the other Edo views in the set, this Edo ukiyo-e print uses Mount Fuji not as the dominant motif but as a quiet horizon presence behind the day-to-day life of the city. The Ryogoku Bridge area was a center of popular entertainment, fireworks displays, and waterside restaurants, and Hokusai's composition gathers all of these associations into a single twilight panorama. It is one of the prints that most clearly demonstrate how he reimagined ukiyo-e print culture as a sweeping geography of contemporary Japan.
