From Hokusai's A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces (c.1833–34), the first ukiyo-e series devoted solely to waterfalls. A fine impression of Yoro Waterfall sold for $100,000—10× its low estimate. A complete set of 8 prints achieved $508,500.
A cascade associated with the hero Minamoto no Yoshitsune's legendary horse-washing ritual at Yoshino in Yamato Province appears in this print from the Shokoku Taki-meguri (Tour of Waterfalls) series. Yoshino was one of Japan's most celebrated mountain landscapes and the site of the fleeing Yoshitsune's final refuge, making every waterfall in its vicinity resonant with the tragic heroism that had made him a beloved figure in Japanese popular imagination.
