Onden no suisha is among the more quietly composed prints in Hokusai's Fugaku Sanjurokkei, published by Nishimuraya Yohachi around 1830–1833. Onden was a farming village in what is now the Shibuya district of Tokyo, where rice paddies required irrigation from wooden waterwheels. The composition foregrounds a large wheel — its scale emphasized relative to nearby workers — with a straight view toward Mount Fuji across flat agricultural land. Hokusai uses the geometry of the wheel's spokes and rectilinear irrigation channels to organize the pictorial space, contrasting the man-made circular form with Fuji's triangular profile on the horizon. The print demonstrates Hokusai's interest in the built and agricultural landscape as a frame for the mountain, departing from more spectacular compositions in the series to present ordinary rural labor. Prussian blue appears in the sky and water surfaces. The strong formal contrast between wheel and mountain is characteristic of Hokusai's approach to industrious human activity in these landscapes.
