ANEGAWA (Ane River)
Description
The Ane River flows through Shiga Prefecture near the historic Nagahama area on Lake Biwa's northern shore, its clear waters characteristic of the mountain-fed streams of the region. Nishijima renders the river in its relationship with the traditional architecture and landscape of the surrounding settlement: the bridge or embankment wall, the water's surface catching sky, the seasonal foliage on the banks. His river scenes consistently treat water not merely as scenic element but as a shaping force in the landscape — the reason settlements formed where they did, the measure of seasonal change.
