"Kanten" — a word for the traditional agar-agar dried in winter cold — here serves as a title for a landscape in Okinawa, Japan's southernmost prefecture. Nishijima's usual vocabulary of grey rooftops and snow-dusted streets gives way to Okinawa's distinctive tropical-influenced architecture: red roof tiles, coral stone walls, subtropical foliage, a palette warmer and more saturated than his typical Kyoto or Shiga subjects. The displacement of setting within a consistent printmaking sensibility makes this a fascinating outlier in Nishijima's work, demonstrating the range of Japanese landscape tradition he was prepared to engage.
