Description
Lake in the Morning depicts the early-hour stillness of a Japanese lake landscape, likely one of the scenic lakes of central Honshu — Suwa, Biwa, or a mountain body of water — when mist sits on the surface and the light is low and diffuse. Nishijima renders the reflective quality of still water through flat color areas whose gradients echo the sky above, a technique requiring careful registration of multiple blocks to achieve tonal continuity. The surrounding landscape — mountains, shoreline trees, perhaps wooden boats or a pier — is rendered with the precise architectural sensibility that characterizes the artist's style even in rural subjects. The palette is dominated by the cool grays and blues of early morning before color saturates the scene, creating a composition of quiet chromatic restraint.
