"Seki-no-ho" depicts a traditional merchant store in Seki, one of the fifty-three post stations along the Tokaido highway, whose preserved streetscape retains much of its Edo-period commercial character. The store's facade carries the architectural vocabulary of a successful post-town merchant establishment: the deep eaves, the latticed windows, the signage and entrance details that communicate the specific goods or services the business provided to passing travelers. Nishijima's rendering of the store honors the continuing vitality of a commercial tradition rooted in the highway travel of an earlier era.
