A small corner shop occupies the junction of two narrow Kyoto streets in this 1977 woodblock print by Clifton Karhu, its wooden facade and low-hanging noren curtain representing the intimate commercial architecture that still survived in the city's traditional neighborhoods. Karhu was drawn to these transitional spaces — the corner, the threshold, the junction — where the geometry of traditional buildings created unexpected visual complexity. The print captures the late-afternoon quality of light on aged wood, the subtle color variations in weathered timber and tile that Karhu observed with a foreigner's fresh, devoted attention.
