SUMINOKA, snow landscape
Description
"Suminoka" — identified as a snow landscape — presents a winter scene in which the dark ink-like (sumi) quality of timber and shadow contrasts with the white expanse of accumulated snow. The title's suggestion of ink painting (sumi-e) is significant: Nishijima's snow landscapes recall the tradition of Japanese monochrome ink painting in their radical simplification of the color palette to near-black and near-white, with the built or natural forms emerging from the white ground in the manner of ink brushwork on paper.
