Description
A scene of travelers on the road — a couple walking together through a landscape that suggests the great highways of Edo-period Japan, the Tokaido or the Nakasendo, where ordinary people and extraordinary figures moved alongside one another on their journeys. Travel prints had a long tradition in Japanese woodblock art stretching back to Hiroshige, and Kyosai's engagement with the genre brings his characteristic human warmth to the familiar subject of departure, distance, and the road.
