Description

From the Gyōretsu Tōkaidō series documenting famous places along the highway between Edo and Kyoto, this oban-format print depicts a boar hunt (inoshishigari) set against the rugged mountain terrain of Hakone. The Hakone pass, one of the most demanding waypoints on the Tōkaidō, was known for dense forested slopes where wild boar were hunted. Kyosai fuses the meisho-e tradition of landscape documentation with narrative action, showing hunters in pursuit through the timber and undergrowth. The composition employs diagonal recession to convey the steep topography of the Hakone mountains. This impression is one of several known states of the design, which differ in coloring, publisher's cartouche details, or minor block wear. Kyosai's characteristic dynamism is evident in the rendering of figures and animals in motion, distinguishing this sheet from the more static landscape conventions of the Hiroshige school.
