Description

A third impression or state of the Hakone boar-hunting composition from the Gyōretsu Tōkaidō series, this woodblock print shares its subject and general design with related impressions while presenting variations in ink density, color application, or cartouche details characteristic of different print runs. The scene depicts an inoshishigari — a traditional boar hunt — conducted in the heavily forested mountains above Hakone, one of the principal checkpoints along the Tōkaidō highway. Wild boar hunting was a martial and aristocratic activity with deep historical associations, lending the image a combination of the meisho-e (famous places) and narrative genre conventions. Kyosai's draftsmanship, translated through the collaborative woodblock process, conveys the physical urgency of the hunt through compressed diagonals and overlapping figures set against the mountain backdrop. The bokashi gradation typical of landscape passages suggests the atmospheric conditions of the high-altitude terrain.
