Description

This print from the Gyōretsu Tōkaidō series depicts Kageishi (Shadow Stone or Echo Stone), a notable rock formation in the Hakone mountains that was counted among the scenic features of the Tōkaidō pass. Hakone's geological landscape, shaped by volcanic activity, produced striking rock formations that attracted both practical interest from travelers navigating the pass and aesthetic attention from artists in the meisho-e tradition. Kyosai places the Kageishi within its forested mountain environment, using the rock as a compositional anchor against which the scale of the surrounding timber and topography can be measured. This impression is one of several known states of the composition. The rendering of rock and mountain surfaces would draw on Kyosai's Kanō training in the tsun-fa (texture stroke) traditions adapted from Chinese ink painting for rendering geological forms. The print continues the series' project of documenting the Tōkaidō's landmarks for a public increasingly reliant on woodblock prints as geographic and cultural reference.
