Description
A kakemono-e (hanging scroll format print) presenting one of Kyosai's compositions in the elongated vertical format traditionally associated with hanging scroll painting. The kakemono-e occupied a hybrid position between print and painting — produced by woodblock technique but intended for display in the alcove (tokonoma) in the manner of actual painted scrolls, where changing the hanging scroll with the season or occasion was a fundamental practice of Japanese interior decoration.
