Description
A nishiki-e from the Tōkaidō meisho fūkei series depicting the Tsuchiyama district and its surrounding Suzuka mountain scenery near the Sakanoshita post-town. This portion of the Tōkaidō, where the road wound through steep forested terrain before emerging onto the Ise plain, offered landscape artists pronounced topographic drama. The composition would have used the vertical format characteristic of oban prints to emphasize the height of the mountain ridges relative to the figures below. Pine and cedar on the slopes, rendered in layered green color blocks with keyblock definition, contrast with the paler tones of rock face and sky. Travelers — reduced to small figures against the scale of the mountains — embody the meisho-e genre's interest in the human encounter with celebrated natural and cultural geography.
