Description
From the Tōkaidō meisho fūkei series, this print addresses the Tsuchiyama and Suzukayama section of the highway — a landscape defined by mountain passes, river crossings, and the notoriously variable weather of the Suzuka range. Tsuchiyama was also known for its waterfall, and depending on the composition's focus, falling or rushing water may appear as a structural element alongside the road and ridge lines. Kyosai's draftsmanship — shaped by training in both the Kanō school and the ukiyo-e tradition — would have brought to this meisho-e a confidence with landscape forms derived from Chinese ink painting conventions as much as from Hiroshige's influential Tōkaidō designs. The result is a print in which mountain forms carry genuine pictorial weight rather than serving purely as topographic notation.
