Untitled, scene of the other world, No. 4 from
Description
A densely packed composition on a solid blue ground shows a golden Buddha figure with a halo seated cross-legged atop a red-draped platform at upper center, hands folded before a set of papers on a low table. Below and around this figure swarm dozens of smaller characters in a chaotic crowd scene: robed men and women in patterned kimonos, bald-headed figures, a red-skinned oni-like demon, a horned blue-grey ox or bull, men in Western-style dark suits and top hats, a mounted horse pulling a cart, and a cannon at lower left, with a yellow open umbrella and red vertical signboards with Japanese characters interspersed among the crowd. The palette is dominated by saturated blue, red, yellow/gold, and green, giving the print a crowded, carnival-like mood; the sheet is bordered by a plain cream mat. Woodblock print by Kawanabe Kyosai, titled "Untitled, scene of the other world, No. 4 from," year unknown.
