Description
Agatsuma Gorge cuts through volcanic rock along the Agatsuma River in Gunma Prefecture, its steep walls and turbulent green water making it a dramatic subject well suited to Hasui's landscape vocabulary. This variant likely represents a different printing state or edition from its paired composition, possibly distinguished by shifts in the bokashi treatment of the sky or the color register of the stone cliffs. Hasui visited the gorge during his extensive sketching travels through the Kantō and Tōhoku regions, producing designs that emphasize the vertical compression of the canyon walls against the narrow ribbon of churning water below. The jagged basalt formations required dense layering of grey and brown ink, while the river itself would be rendered in cool blue-green tones achieved through multiple woodblock passes. Such gorge landscapes were popular subjects among shin-hanga publishers, appealing to Japanese domestic tourists and Western collectors alike who associated mountain river scenery with the unspoiled interior of the country.
