Description
This rain scene at Okutama depicts the mountainous river valley west of Tokyo under the distinctive atmospheric conditions that made Hasui's wet-weather compositions among the most sought-after in the [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) canon. Okutama's terrain — narrow gorges, dark cedar slopes, and the boulder-strewn Tama River — provided a strong structural framework for compositions in which rain does not merely decorate but fundamentally alters the visual character of the landscape. The diagonal of falling rain, printed as fine parallel lines across the full image field, creates a translucent screen through which the valley is perceived, softening hard edges and unifying disparate elements. Water reflections on the river surface, interrupted by raindrops, and the blurred silhouettes of forested slopes dissolving into mist are technical and compositional features consistent with Hasui's mature rain subjects. The print likely employs fifteen or more separate color blocks to achieve the full range of atmospheric tones.
