Description
Namari Onsen (鉛温泉) is a historic hot spring resort in Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture, set along a narrow river gorge in the Tohoku mountains. This print, a second state or edition of the Namari Spa design, depicts the inn and its surrounding landscape, likely showing the ryokan buildings tucked against steep wooded hillsides above the Toyosawa River. Hasui visited remote onsen towns as part of his sketching tours of northern Japan, and these prints capture the particular atmosphere of mountain thermal resorts—rising steam, timber architecture, lantern light, and snow. The existence of multiple editions suggests sustained demand from collectors drawn to the nostalgic imagery of regional inn culture. [Bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations in the sky and water areas would lend the scene its characteristic tonal depth, while limited warm color passages accent the architecture against cool winter surroundings.
