Description
This third variant of the Karasunuma Swamp composition depicts a marshy wetland area in Akita Prefecture, one of the lesser-visited subjects in Hasui's extensive catalogue of regional Japanese landscapes. Karasunuma—whose name suggests a 'crow swamp' or dark marshland—offered a quiet, introspective subject: still water among reeds, the silhouette of bare or sparse trees, and a wide Tōhoku sky. As a third printing state, this impression may reflect later block reworking, with the reed textures or the tonal depth of the water surface differing from earlier editions. Hasui's treatment of wetland subjects typically relies on a low horizon line that gives expansive sky coverage, with careful bokashi transitions recording the particular grey-blue quality of overcast northern light. The absence of dramatic topography or famous landmarks in such compositions reflects his interest in overlooked, unspectacular scenery as worthy of the same careful attention he gave to celebrated meisho.
