Description
Another printing of Hasui's composition depicting the Okayama kanetuki-dō, this impression offers an opportunity to study variations across the multiple editions of this subject in his catalogue. Differences in sky color—ranging from pale amber to cool grey across known impressions—along with variations in the density of surrounding foliage and the warmth of the ground tones allow distinctions between printings. The bell tower itself, a functional timber pavilion housing a suspended bronze bell, serves simultaneously as architectural subject and cultural emblem: a sonic artifact of pre-modern Japanese urban life whose disappearance was actively mourned by shin-hanga publishers and their market. Hasui's ability to invest such a modest structure with compositional dignity—through considered placement within the picture field and sensitive management of surrounding negative space—is representative of his broader practice.
