Description
A second version of Hasui's Botan-dai composition, this print may represent a distinct design from the same Korean travels or a later reworked edition of the original blocks. Pyongyang's Botan-dai park offered varied vantage points — the Taedong River below, the forested hilltop, seasonal foliage in autumn or spring — and Hasui may have produced more than one design from his sketches of the site. Differences between the two versions may lie in the season depicted, the viewing angle, or the coloration of sky and water. Within Hasui's Korean series, Botan-dai prints represent the documentation of a specific named landmark rather than anonymous scenery, placing them in the tradition of named-place prints (meisho-e) that structured both ukiyo-e and shin-hanga landscape production.
