Description
A third recorded state of Hasui's Utagahama composition at Lake Chuzenji, this print returns to a shoreline scene at the mountain-rimmed lake in Nikko National Park. Hasui made sketching trips to Chuzenji during different seasons, and multiple editions of this subject exist with variations in light temperature and color palette. This version likely reflects a distinct printing run with its own block wear characteristics or publisher-directed color adjustments. The washi ground absorbs the ink and pigment layers to produce the soft gradations — characteristic of shin-hanga — that distinguish Hasui's water scenes from those of earlier ukiyo-e masters. Boats or boathouses along the shore may anchor the foreground.
