Description
This print depicts Utagahama, a sandy shore on the western edge of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. Hasui visited this alpine lake repeatedly across his career, drawn to its reflective surface and surrounding forested ridgelines. In this edition, the composition likely emphasizes the interplay between water and mountain, with graduated bokashi washes rendering the distance in atmospheric haze. The calm lake surface mirrors the treeline or sky, a compositional device Hasui employed to create visual depth without receding perspective lines. Printed on washi under the Watanabe Shozaburo or Doi publishing imprints, this is one of multiple states Hasui produced of this scene, each varying in color tone, sky treatment, or seasonal light.
