Description
This print depicts a skyscape dominated by clouds illuminated from below by the setting sun, a subject that allowed Hasui and his carvers and printers to explore the full technical range of shin-hanga color printing. The composition likely shows a body of water in the lower register reflecting the warm tones of the sky, with clouds rendered through layered applications of warm ochres, oranges, and muted crimsons. Graduated bokashi printing along the horizon would have required multiple precisely registered passes to achieve the characteristic blending from deep color at the waterline to lighter tones above. This impression appears to be a variant state or later edition of a composition also recorded under the same title. The absence of human figures focuses attention entirely on atmospheric conditions, characteristic of Hasui's landscape work in the Taisho and early Showa periods.
