Description
This print depicts a rural scene at Mizuki in Ibaraki Prefecture under an overcast sky, and appears to be a variant state or edition of a composition recorded in multiple impressions. Mizuki is a coastal or inland locality in the Kashima region, and Hasui likely depicted a landscape of flat fields, water, or low-lying terrain characteristic of the Kanto Plain under thick, uniform cloud cover. Overcast compositions such as this required careful management of cool gray and blue-gray tones across multiple woodblocks, with bokashi along the horizon line to suggest atmospheric depth. The absence of direct sunlight creates a diffuse, even illumination across the scene. This version and its related impressions likely differ in paper quality, pigment concentration, or printing generation, distinctions that are often more apparent under direct comparison than from titles alone.
