Description
This print depicts the Futatsudo — a pair of small Buddhist halls, the Jogyodo and Hokkedo, standing side by side within the Nikko shrine and temple complex in Tochigi Prefecture. The two halls, architecturally complementary in their bracketing and rooflines, are typically framed by the towering cryptomeria (sugi) that define the Nikko landscape and create its characteristic filtered light. Hasui renders the vermillion-lacquered woodwork of the structures against the dark forest in a composition that balances architectural precision with atmospheric depth. The Nikko subjects were among Hasui's most-published designs, produced in multiple editions as the complex became a major destination for domestic tourism during the Taisho and Showa periods.
