Description

The Japanese title Nikko Futatsudo identifies this print precisely: the two-hall compound of Jōgyōdō and Hokkedo at Rinnoji Temple, among the oldest wooden structures in the Nikko complex. This version, one of several Hasui produced of the subject, likely belongs to his mature period when his registration and color gradation had reached a high degree of refinement. The pairing of architectural form with forest enclosure was central to Hasui's meisho-e approach—sacred sites understood through their landscape context rather than in isolation. The dense stand of cedar framing the rooflines creates a visual compression typical of his Nikko compositions, with the structured geometry of the halls contrasting against the organic irregularity of the trees. Bokashi gradients in the sky and ground register seasonal and temporal mood.
