Description

This print of the Futatsudo at Nikko bears the title 日光二ツ堂 and belongs to the group of compositions Hasui devoted to the twin halls of Rinnoji Temple. Viewed across a series, his Futatsudo prints trace variations in seasonal light and atmospheric condition rather than changes in the architectural subject itself. A spring or summer treatment might present the halls partially obscured by fresh foliage, with the layered green of cryptomeria rendered through successive transparent ink impressions producing deep tonal saturation characteristic of high-quality shin-hanga printing. Foreground elements—a stone pathway, a stone fence, moss-covered paving—would anchor the viewer in the precinct and create a spatial recession into the architectural forms beyond. The oban format standard to Hasui's landscape prints allows sufficient vertical space to include both the towering cedar canopy above and the ground-level detail below.
