Description
Among the Futatsudo series prints Hasui produced over his career, this version of 日光二ツ堂 may represent a later impression distinguished by subtle differences in color mixing, paper, or block wear from earlier editions. Shin-hanga prints were produced in editions managed by the publisher, and later impressions of popular subjects sometimes show slightly different tonal qualities as blocks were reworked or replaced. The subject—Rinnoji's paired Buddhist halls set within the cryptomeria forest of Nikko—remained commercially viable throughout Hasui's productive period, and Watanabe Shōzaburō reissued compositions in response to sustained demand. The Futatsudo's ancient moss-covered stone foundations and the architectural geometry of the two rooflines against forest remain the compositional constants across versions, while atmospheric variation—mist, rain, clear winter light—differentiates individual treatments.
