Description
This variant of Hasui's Palace Doll composition likely represents a distinct publishing state with differences in background color, doll posture, or compositional framing compared to related impressions in the series. Gosho ningyo were traditionally presented as gifts at court and among elite households, and their formal whiteness made them potent subjects for the precise color printing of the shin-hanga workshop. In this state, the interplay between the doll's smooth surface and any textile or ceramic elements in the composition would be rendered through carefully registered color blocks. The subject's departure from Hasui's characteristic landscapes suggests this may be part of a publisher-commissioned series exploring traditional Japanese material culture, possibly timed to seasonal gift-giving occasions such as Hinamatsuri in early spring.
