Description
This variant from Hasui's Palace Doll series presents the gosho ningyo subject with distinctions in color state, background treatment, or compositional arrangement that differentiate it from the six preceding numbered impressions. The accumulation of states in this series suggests sustained commercial interest in the subject, with Watanabe Shozaburo or a subsequent publisher reprinting and reworking the design over time. Gosho ningyo were collected objects in their own right — smooth, portable, and laden with cultural meaning — and their representation in woodblock form doubled as both art and cultural documentation. In Hasui's hands, the precision required to render the doll's smooth surface and formal attire called on the same technical rigor as his landscape work, translated from atmospheric breadth to intimate still-life focus.
