Description
Gosho ningyo are white-lacquered court dolls characterized by rounded, infantile proportions, associated with the Kyoto imperial court from the Edo period onward. Hasui's treatment of this subject departs from his landscape work, placing the doll as the compositional focus against a simple or neutral ground. The technical challenge of rendering the doll's smooth, high-gloss white finish on washi required careful management of negative space and minimal color — likely a pale ground with subtle warm toning to suggest the lacquered surface. Fine details in the doll's garment, if clothed, would be achieved through precise color registration across multiple blocks. The subject belongs to a category of still-life and figure prints that shin-hanga publishers produced alongside landscapes to broaden the movement's market appeal.
