Description
A third printing state or edition of the Hayama, Iyo composition, this version likely reflects changes in the woodblocks over successive print runs. In shin-hanga practice, blocks were carved from cherry wood and subject to gradual wear, which could alter fine details in foliage, water reflections, or sky gradations between editions. Publisher Watanabe Shozaburo's workshop produced multiple runs of popular designs throughout the Taisho and Showa periods, sometimes with revised color key blocks. The subject—a view at Hayama along the Iyo coast of Shikoku—would have featured the island-studded Seto Inland Sea and the mild atmospheric conditions of that maritime region. Comparison with other versions in the series can reveal shifts in the bokashi gradation technique used for sky and water passages.
