Description
One of several impressions of a composition set in Ojiya (小千谷), Echigo Province (present Niigata Prefecture), this print captures the landscape character of a region that receives extreme winter snowfall from prevailing Sea of Japan weather patterns. Ojiya lies in the Shinano River valley and was historically a center of linen weaving; Hasui, drawn to the atmospheric conditions of northern Japan, documented its rivers, gorges, and settled areas. The print likely depicts a gorge or riverside scene with snow-covered slopes framing the composition. Hasui's technique for deep-winter prints relied on reserving the washi paper surface for snow while using graduated blue-gray and purple washes to suggest shadow and cold air, with the sky often rendered as a flat or lightly graded tone. Variations between the multiple impressions in this group reflect differences in ink saturation and pressure across individual hand-printed sheets.
