Description
The Kozu, Osaka composition exists in multiple impression states, and this version represents one such printing from the Watanabe Shôzaburô workshop. Throughout the shin-hanga era, publishers maintained active woodblock sets for popular designs, issuing new impressions in response to collector and retail demand. The resulting variation between impression states—in color saturation, sky gradation, or paper tone—reflects the inherently handcrafted nature of the woodblock printing process. Kozu, the Osaka district providing this print's subject, is associated with Kozu Shrine and the surrounding merchant and residential quarters of the city's historic core. Hasui's treatment of urban Osaka subjects characteristically focuses on transitional light conditions—early morning, dusk, or overcast midday—that soften architectural edges and animate water surfaces with reflected color. The horizontal character of Osaka's urban geography distinguishes these compositions from Hasui's more dramatic mountain and coastal views.
