Description

One of several impressions of Hasui's Kozu, Osaka composition, this print belongs to the body of Osaka subjects the artist developed through direct on-site sketching during his travels. Hasui's working method involved rapid watercolor sketches made in situ, which were then refined into final designs submitted to the Watanabe publishing house for carving and printing. The Kozu area of Osaka, anchored by its historic shrine and surrounded by canal-threaded merchant quarters, provided material for a composition that balances architectural geometry against reflective water surfaces. In Osaka, the flatness of the terrain and the diffuse quality of light over the urban waterway network created atmospheric conditions distinct from Hasui's coastal or mountain subjects. Comparison across multiple impressions of the same block can reveal how the Watanabe workshop adjusted ink mixtures and baren pressure across different print runs, resulting in subtle variations in the final appearance of each published impression.
