Description

A second impression of the Kiri no Asa (Morning Mist) composition, this print shares its subject with the other numbered variants in the collection. Across multiple impressions of the same design, subtle differences in bokashi intensity, pigment depth, and paper tone accumulate to produce distinct visual experiences of the same composition. Hasui's mist landscapes depend heavily on the quality of the printing for their effect: a bokashi that bleeds too far flattens the atmospheric perspective, while one printed too dryly loses the sense of suspended moisture in the air. This impression of the morning mist subject illustrates the shin-hanga process's reliance on the printer's judgment at each stage of production. The underlying composition likely depicts a body of water or valley floor in early morning.
