Description

The third numbered impression of the Kiri no Asa (Morning Mist) composition in this collection, this print participates in the series of variants documenting how the same Hasui design was printed across different runs or editions. The morning mist subject gave Hasui's printer collaborators a demanding technical challenge: rendering the gradual dissolution of landscape forms into pale, diffuse light required careful registration of multiple lightly inked blocks, each adding a thin layer of color to the dampened washi surface. The result, when successful, achieves the soft, luminous quality of actual early morning fog. Compositionally, the print likely features a strong horizontal element—water surface, road, or rice paddies—against which the rising mist provides vertical and spatial depth.
