Description
The title Kiri no Asa (Morning Mist) is one Hasui used for landscape subjects where atmospheric conditions—low-lying fog over water, diffuse light through mountain haze, or early moisture on a harbor—became the primary subject as much as the location itself. This print, one of multiple impressions or editions under the Kiri no Asa title, likely depicts a coastal, riverside, or lakeside scene in which mist softens the middle distance and horizon. Hasui's printers achieved the characteristic dissolution of form in fog through precisely controlled bokashi gradations and reduced contrast in background printing blocks. The washi substrate, often lightly dampened before printing, further contributes to the soft, absorbent quality of the tonal transitions.
