Description
Tsuchiura, situated on the western shore of Lake Kasumigaura in Ibaraki Prefecture, is the subject of one of Hasui's most frequently recorded compositions. Lake Kasumigaura, the second-largest lake in Japan, is characterized by broad flat horizons, early-morning mist, and the low wooden hulls of traditional sailing freight vessels called hobiki-bune, all elements that appear in known impressions of the Tsuchiura morning design. The flat topography of the lake basin produced compositions with a wide sky zone — ideal for demonstrating Hasui's mastery of atmospheric gradation from deep pre-dawn indigo through amber and pale gray at the horizon. The foreground is typically anchored by moored fishing boats or lakeside structures, providing scale against the vast water surface. The Tsuchiura no asa subject survives in numerous recorded states with variations in sky color, boat configuration, and margin seals, reflecting the design's long publishing history and commercial success. This impression represents the fifth recorded variant of the composition.
