Description
The fourth impression state of Hasui's Mt Unzen composition, this print captures the volcanic peaks of Hizen Province during what appears to be an early-to-middle phase of the design's print run. Mt Unzen's active fumarole fields, scattered among peaks rising to approximately 1,500 meters on the Shimabara Peninsula, offered Hasui a landscape combining rugged geological form with perpetual atmospheric transformation — steaming vents, shifting cloud, and the pale mineral coloring of volcanic rock. The shin-hanga technical apparatus of multiple precisely registered color blocks, bokashi gradation, and dampened washi allowed these atmospheric qualities to be rendered with considerable subtlety. This impression's color register and line clarity would reflect the woodblocks' condition at this stage of production, typically showing the full sharpness of the carver's work before extended use begins to soften the finest detail lines.
