Description
Representing the sixth impression of the Unzen composition in this numbered sequence, this print documents one state in the sustained commercial life of one of Hasui's regional landscape designs. Mt Unzen in Hizen Province (present-day Nagasaki Prefecture) was valued in shin-hanga not only for scenic quality but as a geographically specific image that extended the traditional meisho-e concept of famous places to include volcanic and onsen landscapes of western Japan. The sulfurous steam fields around Unzen's peaks provided Hasui with a subject requiring careful restraint: the vapor effect depended on pale graduated washes rather than strong color contrasts, testing the printer's ability to achieve delicacy at scale. The print's colophon and publisher's seal — likely Watanabe Shozaburo or a subsequent licensed publisher — identify when this particular impression entered production within the design's history.
