Description
Mt Unzen (雲仙岳) on the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture — historically part of Hizen Province — is an active volcanic massif known for its steaming fumaroles and sulfurous hot spring terrain called Jigoku (Hells). This impression from the ninth-numbered state of the composition reflects the design's exceptional popularity, sustained through repeated publisher runs. Hasui likely renders the volcanic peaks wreathed in steam or cloud, with the foreground showing the distinctive rocky fumarole fields or the forested slopes descending to Shimabara Bay. The atmospheric steam would have been achieved through carefully modulated bokashi across a light gray or white block, bleeding into the mountain and sky. This late impression may show slight wear in the finest carved lines of the keyblock while retaining the broad color areas that define the composition's visual character.
