Description

Cape Muroto (室戸岬) marks the southeastern tip of Shikoku, jutting into the Pacific Ocean in present-day Kochi Prefecture. This third version of Hasui's Muroto subject reflects a later reprint or reworked edition of a composition he returned to across his career. The cape's ancient volcanic and metamorphic rock formations—worn flat by Pacific surf and tilted at pronounced angles by tectonic uplift—provide strong geometric foreground elements characteristic of Hasui's coastal prints. Compositions of this type typically juxtapose dark, angular wave-worn basalt against open ocean, using atmospheric bokashi gradation to render the tonal shift from pale horizon to deeper sea blue. The remoteness of Cape Muroto, historically associated with the ascetic training of Kōbō Daishi along the Shikoku pilgrimage route, lent the site a particular gravity that suited Hasui's interest in Japan's elemental coastal landscapes. Printed on washi with multiple carved blocks, the design belongs to the meisho-e tradition of celebrated place imagery.
