Description
This second version of the Nagare pleasure quarter scene in Kanazawa depicts the historic licensed entertainment district on the banks of the Asanogawa river. Kanazawa's Nagare-machi was known for its rows of ochaya teahouses, and Hasui likely composed the scene around lantern-lit facades reflected in the dark water of the canal or river. The treatment emphasizes nocturnal atmosphere—deep prussian or indigo grounds against warm pools of orange-yellow light—achieved through careful color separation across multiple woodblocks. Compared to the primary version, this variant may differ in printing, color register, or publisher's seal, reflecting the reissue practices common among Watanabe Shozaburo's inventory.
